Anointed To Serve (II Samuel 5:1-25)

The anointing is a process that God authorizes.  It is a smearing on.  It’s a process that is seen all throughout the bible.

II Corinthians 1:21 – Our First Anointing

“Now he that establisheth us with you in Christ, and anointed us, is God;”

Isaiah 10:27 – The Power of Anointing

“And it shall come to pass in that day, that his burden shall be taken away from off thy shoulder, and his yoke from off thy neck, and the yoke shall be destroyed because of the anointing.”

David’s Multiple Anointings

David’s First Anointing – 1 Samuel 16:13 

David was anointed as a sign that God had chosen him and that he belonged to God.

David’s Second Anointing – 2 Samuel 2:4 

David was anointed in Hebron as the king of Judah.

David’s Third Anointing – 2 Samuel 5:3 

David was anointed in Hebron as king of all of Israel.  David’s scope has changed.

Strategies After Being Anointed

1.)  Get To Work – II Samuel 5:6

David and his men went to work driving out the Jebusites, who were inhabiting the land.  Many of us have some “Jebusites” inhabiting our land, and before we can do anything for God, we are going to have to drive that enemy out.  Your “Jebusite” might be anger, gossip, immorality, etc…  Some of these “Jebusites” are things we like, but nevertheless, they must be driven out.

Jerusalem is a place of worship.  But it is hard to get in His presence and have authentic worship when you allow a Jebusite to rule.

2.)  Get An Assurance – II Samuel 5:12

When you have an assurance of what God has said about you, then you will keep moving towards what God has designed for you.

3.)  Get Ready For The Attack – II Samuel 5:17

The anointing is not for the weary or faint at heart.  Everybody is not excited about your anointing.

The moment you decide to do God’s work, the enemy comes searching to attack you.  A stronghold is a place of protection, where you are safeguarded from the enemy.  The stronghold is where David went and prayed.

Warning – II Samuel 5:22

Don’t be so consumed with past victories, that you can’t properly move forward on your present assignment.  In verse 22 the enemy came against David in the same way as in verse 18, yet David prayed and God gave him a different strategy to defeat the enemy.  Just because the attack looks the same does not mean God’s response will be the same.  Continually go to the place of prayer and seek Him.
