What’s So Special About Jesus’ Name
(Mathew 1:18-25)
(Mathew 1:18-25)
There are many important implications of names not only in our current society, but throughout history:
His Name Establishes Purpose
Matthew begins by mentioning 46 names, all to get to the name of Jesus. And in the text we see that Jesus’ name was intentional and established His purpose. The name Yeshua (Jesus) literally means “He shall save” or “Yahweh is salvation”. Jesus’ purpose is clearly defined in his name.
We see in John 10:10 (ESV) that Jesus confirms this when he said,
“The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.”
“Interestingly enough, there were other people named Jesus’ throughout the Bible, but it is only He that could fulfill His purpose.” – Dr. D’Ann Johnson
His Name Demonstrates His Presence
In Matthew 1:23 (KJV) – Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us.
Even in Isaiah 7:14 we see a prophetic message, telling of the birth of Jesus, and that He would be with us.
“Realize that everything you’re in, He’s with you.” – Dr. D’Ann Johnson
Hebrews 13:5b – For He himself said, “I will never leave you nor forsake you.”
This is encouraging because we can trust that wherever we are, He is there with us. God is not only present in Heaven he is also present in the earth. There is never a time when God is not with us.
His Name Declares His Power
To really understand the significance of Matthew 1:24-25, we can look at the prophetic word in Isaiah 9:6.
For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
“A child can be born, but only a Son can be given.” – Dr. D’Ann Johnson
The son’s responsibility is to ensure that the plans of his father are carried on.
We must stop just looking at the “little baby boy” and recognize that Jesus is actually the Son! Make room in your heart for the Son!
Jesus’ name is the only name that can put us back together.
We can’t throw anyone away and think they are hopeless because even a sinner can call on the name of Jesus and be saved.
