What to Do When You Are Overwhelmed
(Psalm 61:1-8)
(Psalm 61:1-8)
Today, the CHURCH celebrates PENTECOST SUNDAY. Pentecost Sunday is the celebration of the day when THE HOLY SPIRIT was given to the Church. It was 50 days after Easter and 10 days after Jesus ascended back to the Father.
In John 16:5-7 Jesus revealed that he had to go in order for the Holy Spirit to come to the church.
John 16:5–7 (NKJV)
5“But now I go away to Him who sent Me, and none of you asks Me, ‘Where are You going?’
6But because I have said these things to you, sorrow has filled your heart.
7Nevertheless I tell you the truth. It is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you; but if I depart, I will send Him to you.
Now that He (The Holy Spirit) is here, followers of Jesus must know:
Before Pentecost, The Holy Spirit would come upon individuals, and they would do things that they could not do without Him.
.
The Holy Spirit is not an “it”
The Holy Spirit possesses the QUALITIES OF PERSONALITY: intellect, will, and emotion (or thinking, feeling, and acting)
The Holy Spirit possesses intellect
1 Cor. 2:11: For what man knows the things of a man except the spirit of the man which is in him? Even so no one knows (discerns clearly) the things of God except the Spirit of God.
The Holy Spirit possesses emotion
Eph. 4:30: And do not grieve (to distress, make sad or sorrowful) the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.
The Holy Spirit can be grieved
The Holy Spirit possesses a will
1 Cor. 12:11: But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually as He wills.
The Holy Spirit is not a feeling
Even though His presence can be felt.
.
The Holy Spirit is not “something”
We often say, “Something told me” when in fact what we likely experienced was a prompting from the Holy Spirit.
“Go ahead and give Him His props.” – Pastor Billy Johnson
.
He is the third person of the Trinity (Gen. 1:1-2, 26)
All three persons of the trinity were there before the beginning.
.
He is the Comforter (John 14:1-6; 12-16)
The Comforter comes alongside you to console, intercede, help, advocate and counsel.
“If you are a believer of Jesus Christ, you have God almighty with you…opposite, together, with” – Pastor Billy Johnson
.
He is the Spirit of Truth (John 14:17)
“The Holy Spirit is not into lies.” – Pastor Billy Johnson
.
He testifies of Jesus (the Truth) – John 15:26
.
He guides us into all truth – John 16:13
