In Times of Trouble Whose Hand Are You In?
(Luke 23:46)
(Luke 23:46)
The events of these past three weeks, the uncertainty of each day cause me to look at this passage of scripture with new perspective. I needed to be reminded that God is in control and that not just me, but this entire world, is in His Hands.
This passage is about relationship.
Connection to God
“Father”
–
Communication with God
Jesus spoke to the Father and that’s what we do when we pray
–
Confidence in God
“Into your hands, I commit (commend) my spirit
–
The word commend (KJV) and commit (NIV & NAS) same Greek word which means to deposit as a trust or for protection; to give
Jesus made a deliberate choice to deposit, to give, to place in trust His spirit into God’s Hands.

Jesus came to earth to do one thing and that was to reconcile man back to God. And because God, as Father, He knew He could trust Him with His very life.
Proverbs 3:5-6 tells us to – Trust in the Lord with all our hearts and lean not to our own understanding.
Psalm 4:5 – Offer the sacrifices of righteousness and trust the Lord
Psalm 56 4;11- In God I trust; I will not be afraid. What can man do to me?

Look at the situation Jesus is in; he is about to die a terrible death. He has been made to carry His cross up Golgotha’s Hill, made to lay down on the cross, and then nailed to it only to have the cross picked up and thrusted into the earth with such force that some commentaries say that His flesh was being ripped and shredded. That’s trouble. All we need to do is turn the news on, pick up a newspaper, look at random social media posts to hear of trouble, but if we are honest, we can reflect on our lives and testify that there have been seasons of trouble
Psalm 46:1 tells us that that God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.
James 1:2-4, in the NLT, says, Dear brothers and sisters whenever trouble comes your way, let it be an opportunity for joy. and Nehemiah 8:10 says…” for the joy of the Lord is our strength
I have heard it said, you are either in trouble right now, just come out of trouble or headed to trouble
For Jesus to have remained on the Cross, He knew the only hands that could handle trouble were God’s hands.

Jesus already knew He had the victory, because he made the choice to commit his spirit into His father’s hands. No one forced Him. He knew that He had come to redeem man’s sins and restore him to a right relationship with God. He knew all of this was a part of the plan and He was going to finish strong.
Besides John 13:3 tells us this, Jesus, knowing that the Father had given all things into His hands and that he had come forth from God and was going back to God.
Jesus committed His Spirit into God’s Hands, and we likewise must make the same choice to commit our Spirits. It takes confidence in the one to whom you are depositing and giving your spirit.
