Get Your Heart Right: The Danger of Unbelief

Unbelief means to refuse to put one’s trust or reliance in something or someone; faithlessness.  Faith is essential to please God (Luke 18:8).

There is danger in harboring unbelief in your heart. He who believes has light, he who does not believe has no light.  “The thing that brings God the greatest pleasure is being believed.” – Pastor Billy R. Johnson

The Reason for Unbelief

1. A Hardened Heart (Hebrews 3:7)

• Our heart becomes calloused
• We hear but refuse to obey
• We reject God

2. What Caused the Hardened Heart?

• Having no faith in His promise (Psalm 106:24)
• We do not believe or trust His saving power (Psalm 78:22)

God is speaking to us, but we have no faith to hear because our heart is hardened.

Our heart is also hardened if our promise hasn’t come to pass in our time.  Because we do not believe the promise or the power our heart hardens.  “Our part is simply to believe, and that God has the power to bring the promise to pass.” – Pastor Billy R. Johnson

The moment we begin to disbelieve, our heart hardens.

The Results of the Unbelief

1. Could not go further after coming out of bondage (Hebrews 3:16)

• In the scripture, they came out of Egypt but were unable to enter. They remained in a habitual state of in-between after being released from bondage. They could not exercise their faith in this state of in-between.

2. God was angry (Hebrews 3:17)

• The people died in the wilderness.

3. The ultimate result was not entering into a place of rest (Hebrews 3:18)

What is the Remedy (Hebrews 3:14)

1. Hold onto the original confidence that we had in the truth.
2. Hold onto our endurance.
3. Hold steadfast to hope. (Hebrews 10:23)

Hold tight to the original confidence because God can be trusted to keep His promise.  When life gets us off focus you still must hold on to the endurance.  Lastly, hope is the expectation of a favorable future.
