Family Matters 2 – Roles in the Family
(Genesis 2:7-9; 15-18)
(Genesis 2:7-9; 15-18)
Today’s roles in the family will focus on husbands, wives, parents and children.
Ephesians 5:25-28
25Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself for her, 26That He might sanctify and cleanse her with the washing of water by the word, 27That He might present her to Himself a glorious church, not having spot or wrinkle or any such thing, but that she should be holy and without blemish. 28So husbands ought to love their own wives as their own bodies; he who loves his wife loves himself.
In scripture, the command to love has been given to the man (husband).
A husband should provide unconditional love for his family.
A husband should give himself for his wife (surrender; yield)
“When we are giving we are most like God.” – Pastor Billy Johnson
A husband is to sanctify his wife.
A husband is to nourish and cherish his wife.
Genesis 2:18-24
A wife should be her husband’s helper
A wife must work together with her husband to fulfill God’s purpose.
Wives should summit to their husbands.
Ephesians 5:22
Wives, submit to your own husbands, as to the Lord.
Submit here means to come under the orderly arrangement.
God made a woman to be comparable to man.
“Wives are to submit to the husband’s love.” – Pastor Billy Johnson
“We are commanded to submit whether or not he is leading in love.” – Dr. D’Ann Johnson
The wife’s attitude and position of honor may bring the husband to submission to Christ.
A wife is to acknowledge her husband’s position as head.
Ephesians 5:23
For the husband is the head of the wife, as also Christ is head of the church; and He is the Savior of the body.
“Biblical leadership is positional, it’s not conditional.” – Dr. D’Ann Johnson
A wife is to reverence or respect her husband.
Ephesians 5:33
Nevertheless let each one of you in particular so love his own wife as himself, and let the wife see that she respects her husband.
Think of your husband as being important. See him as being great. Regard him as deserving to be honored.
Deuteronomy 6:4
4“Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one! 5You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your strength. 6And these words which I command you today shall be in your heart. 7You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, when you walk by the way, when you lie down, in when you rise up.
Our responsibility as parents is to teach our children to love God.
It’s the parent’s responsibility to educate our children.
Ephesians 6:1
Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right.
Obedience is learned.
Children should honor their father and mother.
“Have an atmosphere of honor and love in your home.” – Pastor Billy Johnson
